There’s no shortage of great food around GBW, but after plenty of taste testing (you’re welcome), we’ve narrowed it down to our top 9 favorite spots. From southern staples to smoky BBQ, here’s where we go when we’re hungry — and maybe just a little picky.
1. Monell’s
Family-style Southern comfort food done right. This place feels like a big Sunday dinner with your favorite relatives — if your relatives could cook like pros. You’ll pass around heaping bowls of fried chicken, cornbread, mac & cheese, and banana pudding. Come hungry. Leave rolling. Oh yeah.....you can't be on your cell phone at the dinner table, just like it sould be.
2. Superica
Tex-Mex that’s worth the hype.Chips, queso, tacos, and a vibe that’s half vintage, half fiesta — Superica knows how to do bold flavors with flair. The wood-grilled fajitas are life-changing, and don’t even get us started on the margaritas.
3. Arnold’s Country Kitchen
A Nashville institution with soul. This cafeteria-style “meat & three” is all about the classics: roast beef, greens, cornbread, and pie that reminds you of grandma’s house. It’s down-home, no-frills, and exactly what you want it to be.
4. Butchertown Hall
Where Texas BBQ meets modern cool.Part smokehouse, part biergarten, this spot serves up perfectly smoked brisket, wood-fired tacos, and craft brews in a beautifully designed space. Great for date nights, group hangs, or just treating yourself.
5. Slim & Husky’s
Pizza, culture, and community — all in one box. We’re biased (one of the owners is my neighbor 👋), but this spot deserves the love. Their artisan pizzas are fire — try the "Got 5 On It" — and the vibe is just as fresh. Local art, good music, and cinnamon rolls that should be illegal.
6. Jack’s BBQ
No-nonsense BBQ that hits the spot. This is where you go when you want solid, smoky meats and a quick, satisfying meal. The brisket is tender, the ribs fall off the bone, and the sauces let you choose your BBQ destiny.
7. Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint
Simple menu. Big flavors. These guys keep it tight with a small burger menu, but every one is a hit. Pair your burger with a deep beer list and you’ve got yourself a perfect low-key night out.
8. Grillshack
Hidden gem with backyard vibes. You might miss it if you’re not looking, but once you try the smashburgers and fries, you won’t forget it. It’s casual, it’s quick, and it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local. So good and close we eat it for every workshop.
9. Big Al’s Deli
A true neighborhood spot with big heart.Don’t let the name “deli” fool you — Big Al’s serves up soulful Southern food with personality. From hot chicken to catfish to daily specials that never miss, this is comfort food with a side of love. Get your picture with Big Al's which is actually little Al and tell him GBW sent you.
Honorable Mentions (because we’re hungry just thinking about them):
Let’s be real — narrowing it to 9 was tough. Ask us tomorrow, and we might add 5 more. But for now, these are the spots we keep going back to.
